Med-Trans Corporation operated the Eurocopter EC-135 on behalf of the University of Mississippi Medical Center’s AirCare service.
It went down in a wooded area near the Natchez Trace Parkway and Highway 43. First responders rushed to the scene but found no survivors among the wreckage.
According to officials, the helicopter had just completed a patient transport and was returning to its base in Columbus when the crash occurred.
No patients were aboard at the time of the accident. The identities of the three crew members have not yet been released as authorities work to notify their families.
Republican Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves honored the fallen heroes in a statement that resonated with many across the state.
“It’s a tragic reminder of the risks Mississippi’s first responders take every day to keep us safe. Our state will never forget the sacrifice of these heroes,” said Governor Reeves.
UMMC Health Affairs Vice Chancellor Dr. LouAnn Woodward stated, “This is an unimaginable loss for our AirCare team, which has served Mississippi for nearly three decades without a fatal accident.”
“The entire medical center family is heartbroken over this. This is the crew that responds to emergencies all across the state, and to see them today to respond to one of their own was just something that you can’t put into words,” she added.
The crash represents the first fatal accident in the program’s 29-year history, a remarkable safety record for a service that regularly operates in high-stress and dangerous conditions.
The AirCare team comprises four helicopter units stationed throughout Mississippi.
These units provide critical emergency medical services to rural communities where ground transportation would take too long for critically injured patients.
Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigators have been dispatched to the scene.
The NTSB will lead the investigation into the cause of the crash, though preliminary findings may take weeks or months to determine.
Local authorities have asked the public to avoid the crash site during the investigation to preserve evidence.
The tragic accident follows a series of recent aviation incidents that have raised safety concerns.
Just weeks earlier, a medical transport jet crashed in Philadelphia, claiming seven lives.
In a separate incident, a single-engine Beechcraft Bonanza went down in Pennsylvania, though all five passengers survived despite three suffering burns.
Med-Trans Corporation, based in Denton, Texas, operates a large fleet of medical helicopters across the United States.
The company has not yet issued a statement regarding the specific mechanical status of the aircraft involved in the crash.
As investigators work to determine what caused this tragedy, the small Mississippi community is rallying around the families of those lost.
Local first responders held a moment of silence at the crash site, honoring their fallen brothers and sisters who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving their fellow Americans in need.
