Americans demanding accountability are cheering as the day of reckoning has finally come for disgraced former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) has opened a criminal investigation into Cuomo’s nursing home COVID policies that sent thousands of elderly Americans to their deaths.
The former governor, now running for New York City mayor, faces scrutiny over lies to Congress about his pandemic decision-making that prioritized politics over vulnerable seniors.
The probe began about a month ago through the U.S. attorney’s office in Washington, D.C.
It follows a referral from Republican Representative James Comer, who accused Cuomo of lying to Congress about his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic in nursing homes.
At the center of the investigation is Cuomo’s controversial March 2020 directive that barred nursing homes from refusing COVID-19 patients.
Many believe the policy led to thousands of preventable deaths among New York’s most vulnerable population.
House Republicans argue that Cuomo lied during a 2024 congressional hearing about his role in crafting this policy and subsequent reports about it.
Comer has been particularly vocal about Cuomo’s deception, stating the former governor was “caught red-handed lying to Congress.”
Evidence suggests Cuomo was directly involved in drafting the nursing home report, contradicting his sworn testimony.
Emails and handwritten edits uncovered during the congressional investigation point to Cuomo’s personal involvement in crafting the policy that many critics say sealed the fate of thousands of elderly New Yorkers.

Voices for Seniors issued a statement:
“The wheels of justice are finally beginning to turn. For over five years, our movement has been fueled by heartbreak and a single-minded demand for the truth. This investigation is not just justified, it’s overdue. The evidence paints a damning picture of a leader more concerned with image than integrity. Grieving families have waited long enough.”
Voices for Seniors co-founder Vivian Zayas, who lost a loved one due to Cuomo’s policies, expressed relief, saying, “Thank God our fight has not been in vain.”
We Care Memorial Wall has also long demanded accountability for Cuomo’s actions.
These groups represent families who watched helplessly as their elderly relatives died alone in nursing homes that were forced to accept COVID-positive patients under Cuomo’s directive.
The timing of this investigation is particularly notable as Cuomo is currently running for mayor of New York City.
It also comes after federal prosecutors dropped a corruption case against Cuomo’s mayoral opponent, Eric Adams.
While Adams faces no charges, Cuomo now finds himself under federal scrutiny after years of avoiding accountability.
In response, Cuomo’s team is claiming political persecution. Spokesperson Rich Azzopardi dismissed the investigation as “lawfare and election interference plain and simple.”
Cuomo has consistently deflected blame, once telling Congress, “These are all diversions to blame New York and other states for the culpability of the federal response, which was malpractice.”
This pattern of deflection has become Cuomo’s signature response to criticism of his deadly nursing home policies.
Notably, the Biden-era DOJ declined to act on the congressional referral against Cuomo.
Only after President Donald Trump returned to office did the Justice Department finally take action to investigate one of the most controversial pandemic policies that may have cost thousands of innocent American lives.
