Launches began in April 2025, when a rocket carried the first 27 satellites into space. By the fall, Amazon reported hundreds of satellites already circling the planet, with dozens more added on nearly every mission.
The company renamed the effort Amazon Leo that November, signaling the shift from prototype testing to a real commercial product.
Amazon Leo now markets itself as a constellation of more than 3,000 satellites linked by high-speed laser connections to ground stations, fiber lines, and internet hubs around the world.
That network is designed to bring reliable broadband to rural towns, remote job sites, and communities that cable and fiber companies have never reached.
A Second Wave Aimed At Phones And Devices
The new filing pushes Amazon’s ambitions well past the original 3,236-satellite design. Reports describe a mega-constellation of roughly 5,105 satellites built for direct-to-device connectivity.
This means ordinary smartphones and other gadgets could link to satellites without a special dish or antenna. That would move Amazon Leo beyond home internet and into the same space where wireless carriers now compete for coverage.
Direct-to-device satellite service has become one of the most watched fights in telecom. SpaceX already offers a version through its Starlink network paired with T-Mobile.
If regulators approve Amazon’s expanded plan, the company would be building toward a fleet nearly matching Starlink’s scale, giving customers a real alternative for both home broadband and mobile coverage in dead zones.
