Parents and teachers are mourning this tragedy as a horrific school bus accident killed a student and left several others critically injured when a tire blowout caused the vehicle to overturn on Interstate 77.
Watch the video below.
The 2021 Blue Bird bus, carrying 35 students from Pine Ridge Middle School returning from a field trip, veered off the road and struck a guardrail before flipping.
The crash occurred near Exit 55 (Highway 97) in Chester County, blocking all southbound lanes as emergency responders rushed to the scene.
South Carolina Highway Patrol Sergeant Tyler Tidwell confirmed the bus “traveled off of the road to the right, struck a guard rail and overturned,” creating a chaotic scene with children trapped inside the vehicle.
Emergency services, including five medical helicopters, responded with full force to transport the injured students. Five individuals were rushed to hospitals in critical condition.
The Chester County Coroner’s Office has not yet released the name of the deceased student, respecting the family’s need for privacy during this devastating time.
Hunter Pringle with the Chester County Sheriff’s Office stated, “I can confirm there were multiple injuries, but I do not know the specifics regarding those injuries.”
For many families, the first indication of trouble came through text messages from their children.
“The text messages said, ‘Hey, the bus flipped over, but I’m okay,'” recounted parent Tiffany Porterfield, who was one of many parents rushing to reunite with their children at the scene.
Two other buses from the same field trip were not involved in the accident, sparing dozens of other students from potential harm.
After being checked by medical personnel, uninjured students were eventually reunited with their parents or guardians at designated meeting locations.
South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster expressed his condolences, stating:
“Today’s school bus accident in Chester County is a tragedy no family should ever have to endure. Peggy and I are heartbroken. Please join us in praying for the victim, their family, a speedy recovery for those injured, and the entire Lexington Two community. All of South Carolina is with you.”
While Pine Ridge Middle School is currently on spring break, officials have announced that counselors will be available for students when they return.
A vigil was held at the school where the community came together to mourn the loss of one of their own and pray for those still recovering.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol has launched an investigation into the accident, which will include examining the condition of the bus, its maintenance records, and the circumstances leading to the tire blowout.
Such investigations are crucial for preventing similar tragedies in the future and ensuring our children’s safety on school transportation.
Moreover, this heartbreaking incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of rigorous school bus safety standards and maintenance protocols.
As the investigation unfolds, the Chester County community stands united in grief and support for those affected by this tragedy.
This demonstrates the resilience and strength of small-town America when faced with unimaginable loss.
