VIDEO: US Navy Announces a ‘First’

(DailyEmailNews.com) – Commissioned on Saturday, Virginia-class submarine USS New Jersey marked a milestone for the United States Navy as it became its first coed vessel.

In a promotional video released on the social platform X, one female sailor highlighted the significance of this integration.

Watch the video below.

“New Jersey is representative of the future of the submarine force, and integrating this boat is a long time coming,” she said.

This submarine is the first in the Navy’s 100-year history of submarines to be designed from the start for a mixed-gender crew.

The Department of Defense notes that over 60,000 women currently serve in the Navy, making up more than 20% of its personnel.

Women officers have been part of submarine crews since 2011 and now enlisted women are joining them.

The promotional video celebrated this new chapter of inclusivity.

“It’s a testament to the strength diversity brings to our Navy. Side-by-side men and women will operate this vessel united in purpose, skill, and determination,” the narrator stated, as clips of the submarine and its crew were shown.

“This is really the first time the Navy is truly planning for the future regarding manning and taking advantage of the entire population, for finding those rare humans who can be and should be submariners,” another female sailor added.

Originally announced in May 2015 as a “nuclear-powered fast-attack submarine,” the USS New Jersey is recognized as much more than just a formidable naval asset.

“It isn’t just a powerhouse beneath the waves, it’s a symbol of progress breaking barriers as it protects our shores,” the narrator expressed.

The narrator concluded, “The future of Navy warfare starts here, and it’s more inclusive, stronger, and more capable than ever.”
