Speaking at a rally in Uniondale, New York, to a crowd that included Local 94 workers who oversee HVAC and mechanical systems in NYC buildings, Trump emphasized the significance of this gesture for the city’s first responders.

“I think this is a big deal, because in your honor, I am announcing tonight that as president, I will officially make the Ground Zero site at the World Trade Center a national monument protected and maintained by the United States government,” Trump declared.

He added, “So that hallowed ground and the memory of those who perished there will be preserved for all time, preserved forever. And you deserve it.”

He also praised the efforts of those involved in creating the 9/11 National Memorial Museum.

“The New Yorkers who created the 9/11 National Memorial Museum really did an amazing job, didn’t they? And many of them are here today and I want to thank them and I want to ensure that their outstanding work is sustained forever,” he expressed.

The 9/11 attacks resulted in 2,977 immediate deaths at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

The 9/11 Memorial notes that the toll continues to climb due to diseases linked to exposure near Ground Zero.

By December 2023, over 6,781 volunteers who participated in the cleanup had passed away from related illnesses or cancers.

This figure more than doubles the number of those killed during the attacks themselves.

As recent as September 2024, the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) revealed that more than 360 of its firefighters, EMTs and department members have died from illnesses related to the World Trade Center.

This figure surpasses the 343 FDNY members lost on the day of the attacks.
