(DailyEmailNews.com) – Signaling a commitment to enact President-elect Donald Trump’s America First agenda, Senate Republicans have chosen Senator John Thune (SD) as their new Majority Leader.
Thune’s election marks a key moment for the GOP as the party prepares to tackle the nation’s critical issues, including border security and energy independence.
Thune defeated Sen. John Cornyn (TX) and Sen. Rick Scott (FL) in a secret ballot, solidifying his position as the next Senate Republican leader.
Setting the tone for his leadership, Thune declared, “We’re excited to reclaim the majority and to get to work with our colleagues in the House to enact President (Donald) Trump’s agenda.”
“We have a mandate from the American people — a mandate, not only to clean up the mess left by the Biden-Harris-Schumer agenda, but also to deliver on President Trump’s priorities,” he added.
Thune’s rise to Senate Majority Leader comes as Republicans secured a 53-47 majority, reclaiming control of the chamber.
This victory is a testament to the hard work of figures like Thune, who raised over $31 million to support Senate Republicans and flip three Democrat-held seats.
The new Senate leadership team, including John Barrasso as deputy and Tom Cotton as conference chair, is set to hit the ground running when the 119th Congress convenes in January.
Their primary focus will be on implementing Trump’s agenda, which includes strengthening border security, cutting regulations and promoting America-first energy policies.
Thune stated:
“I am extremely honored to have earned the support of my colleagues to lead the Senate in the 119th Congress, and I am beyond proud of the work we have done to secure our majority and the White House. This Republican team is united behind President Trump’s agenda, and our work starts today.”
Thune’s leadership style is marked by a friendly demeanor and humble approach, which has earned him widespread respect among Senate Republicans.
He has committed to opening up the legislative process and allowing more amendment votes, signaling a departure from outgoing Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s tactics.
As the GOP prepares to retake control of the Senate, Thune has made it clear that confirming Trump’s nominees for key positions will be a top priority.
“What we’re going to do is make sure that we are processing his nominees in a way that gets them into those positions, so they can implement his agenda. How that happens remains to be seen,” Thune explained.
