(DailyEmailNews.com) – In a shocking revelation of corruption within the education system, former Duval Teachers United union leaders have been indicted for stealing over $2 million from hardworking teachers.
Terrie Brady and Ruby George, the former president and vice president of Duval Teachers United, are facing fraud, conspiracy, and money laundering charges.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) alleges that between 2013 and 2022, Brady and George orchestrated a scheme to sell unearned leave time back to the union, pocketing over $1.2 million each in the process.
The indictment details a web of deceit, like submitting false documentation to union auditors and concealing their actions by signing each other’s checks. This alarming abuse of power continued unchecked for nearly a decade.
The DOJ remains focused on recovering at least $2.6 million, which is believed to be the fraud’s proceeds.
Adding insult to injury, Brady faces additional money laundering charges for using $44,000 of stolen funds to pay off personal credit card debt.
In September 2023, the FBI and IRS raided the union’s Jacksonville headquarters, forcing both leaders into retirement and exposing weaknesses in internal monitoring and control mechanisms.
This blatant misuse of union resources underscores the extent to which these leaders prioritized their own financial gain over the interests of the educators they claimed to represent.
The Duval Teachers United represents approximately 13,000 teachers and school employees, generating about $5 million in annual revenue.
The scale of this fraud is staggering, potentially impacting thousands of educators who trusted their union to fight for their rights and interests.
DeSantis accused the unions of being too focused on politics. He promised to increase teacher pay and limit the salaries of union officials.
“Having partisan groups basically get special privileges for deductions and all these other stuff, you know, that doesn’t work and so, I think this will be a huge, huge boon for transparency and efficiency in our school system,” DeSantis stated.
Ironically, Brady had previously criticized DeSantis for proposing such transparency requirements, a stance that now appears deeply suspect in light of these allegations.
In 2023, Brady expressed concerns about Florida Governor Ron DeSantis trying to add new rules for financial transparency for unions.
“We think we’re pretty transparent in the work that we do,” Brady said at the time.
Brady’s statement about transparency has been blasted as hypocritical, given the elaborate scheme she orchestrated to defraud the very members she was meant to protect.
Brady’s tenure saw her become a prominent advocate for teachers within the district, earning her a lifetime achievement award just last year.
However, these accolades now stand tainted by her reported financial transgressions.
Brady has held previous roles in the Democrat National Committee and Florida Democrat Party, a point that is sparking debate within conservative circles about partisan dealings in unions.
This case underscores the critical need for reform in union governance and financial oversight.
The hardworking teachers of Duval County deserve better than to have their trust betrayed by those meant to advocate for their interests.
