(DailyEmailNews.com) – In a sneaky move by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, the New York Democrat is gearing up to press Senate Republicans into a second vote on legislation they previously halted in June, aimed at safeguarding women’s access to in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments.
This issue is becoming increasingly significant in the 2024 election discourse, The Hill stresses in a report.
“The Senate will vote once again to take up the very same bill we voted on earlier this summer, establishing a nationwide right to IVF and making it easier for people to access this critical treatment,” Schumer declared on the Senate floor.
“Republicans can’t claim to be profamily on one hand, only to block profamily policies like federal protections for IVF and the child tax credit. But that’s what they did this summer, and I hope we get a different outcome when we vote for a second time,” he declared further, as he criticized the GOP.
In the initial voting round, Senators Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Susan Collins (R-ME) stood out as the sole Republicans supporting the advancement of the bill when Schumer introduced it in June.
The proposal, championed by Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), seeks to legally ensure individuals the right to obtain IVF treatments and mandates that doctors can offer and insurance firms can cover these procedures.
Furthermore, it would empower the Department of Justice to initiate civil suits to uphold individuals’ rights to these treatments.
Additional provisions in the bill would permit military personnel to preserve sperm or eggs before being deployed to combat zones or areas designated as hazardous.
It also aims to enhance the affordability of fertility treatments by obliging both employer-sponsored and public insurance plans to include coverage for them.
Despite garnering only 48 votes in its previous Senate appearance in June, Democrat senators maintain that Schumer is intent on maintaining visibility on the topic of women’s access to health care.
They perceive this as a pivotal issue for Democratic contenders in challenging electoral races.
