(DailyEmailNews.com) – Palm Beach County officials are contemplating actions against Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort due to traffic congestion caused by the Secret Service’s road closure.
Effective since July 20, this road closure was a security measure following the failed attempted assassination of the GOP presidential nominee at a rally last month.
The closure has sparked concerns about accessibility and security as Mar-a-Lago prepares to reopen for Palm Beach’s social season this fall.
Recently, the Palm Beach Council instructed town staff to explore potential responses to the ongoing road shutdown.
Mayor Danielle Moore revealed her frustration, stating, “In my mind, if the road is closed, the Mar-a-Lago Club is closed.”
She further questioned the viability of the club’s operations under these conditions, “There’s no way in God’s green earth that they can bring 350 people into that club.”
“It’s completely illogical that you’ve got a road closed and then you’re going to let 350 strangers into your club,” she added.
The town’s response includes seeking clarification from the Secret Service about the legal basis for the road closure.
Specifically, the town wants to know the details about the closure’s duration and enforcement even when Trump is not present.
Mar-a-Lago operates under a declaration-of-use agreement, which was made when it opened as a private social club in 1993 within a residential zoning district.
If violations are found, this agreement and the town’s regulations could potentially influence the decision to revoke the club’s operational permissions.
This situation follows previous disputes over the use of Mar-a-Lago. In 2021, neighbors attempted to prevent Trump from declaring the resort his primary residence. However, the then-town attorney said the agreement did not ban Trump from doing so.
Currently, South Ocean Boulevard, which lies next to Mar-a-Lago and the Atlantic Ocean, remains closed to all but emergency vehicles and residents who can provide proper identification at checkpoints.
This closure is expected to last at least until the November 5 general election.
Adding to the complexities, a Chinese citizen was arrested on July 31 after attempting to enter Mar-a-Lago multiple times, claiming to possess documents linking China to the assassination attempt on July 13.
