Shiffrin carved her name into the annals of skiing history at Sestriere, Italy, when she outclassed her competitors in the slalom event.
The 29-year-old Coloradan finished a commanding 0.61 seconds ahead of Croatian Zrinka Ljutic.
This victory marks Shiffrin as the first male or female skier to reach the centennial milestone in World Cup wins, putting American exceptionalism on the global stage.
“I didn’t know if it said fourth or first. A hundred times later, and I still can’t find the darn scoreboard,” Shiffrin joked between tears.
“My feeling is blank a little bit. It’s overwhelming. It’s too hard to find thoughts for it. But that’s also a very peaceful moment because normally I’m only thinking. So sometimes it’s nice to have a moment where I can’t think,” she went on.
Shiffrin’s triumph is particularly noteworthy given the adversity she’s faced. In November, she suffered a major crash that resulted in a puncture wound and muscle tears.
Lesser athletes might have called it quits, but not this American champion. Shiffrin’s unwavering determination saw her return to competition in January.
Shiffrin stated, “I have wondered in the last weeks so many times whether it is the right thing to come back.”
“We didn’t take the easy way, that’s for sure, but in the end, in order to keep moving forward and to finish this recovery, I have to be in start gate, and I have to experience these emotions when they’re good and when they’re bad,” she continued.
“That’s really important. Today was just an amazing day in the middle of some really tough months, but I’m very thankful for this day,” the star added.
Shiffrin is also using her success to give back to her community. She has partnered with the Share Winter Foundation to raise $100,000 for youth ski and snowboard programs.
“I don’t know that it’s possible to dream about a milestone like this. It’s too big, it’s too long, it takes too much,” she said.
As Shiffrin prepares for upcoming races in Sweden and Idaho, she carries with her the hopes and admiration of millions of Americans nationwide.
Her journey serves as an inspiration to all who believe in the power of never giving up to overcome obstacles and achieve greatness.
