An unexpected alliance, Amazon’s foray into election night programming surely raises eyebrows, with Williams and his former NBC colleague Jonathan Wald at the helm.
This collaboration marks a notable shift for streaming services, challenging the established TV networks’ turf.
Come November 5, “Election Night Live with Brian Williams” will air on Amazon Prime Video, commencing at 5 p.m. Eastern.
This endeavor into live election coverage by Amazon is a first, considering the company’s typical engagement with entertainment rather than news programming.
Amazon Prime says viewers can expect a comprehensive delivery of election results and analyses, thanks to contributions from diverse third-party news entities.
Guiding this collaboration is Jonathan Wald, a name with a vast experience at NBC and CNN, in the role of executive producer.
It also features the presence of Glenn Weiss, with his directorial credentials from events like the Oscars.
Although Amazon lacks its own news operation, the venture includes multiple third-party inputs, offering something that no TV network has dared attempt before.
Brian Williams’ career includes anchoring NBC Nightly News until 2015 and contributing to MSNBC until 2021.
He reportedly expressed enthusiasm about this new venture with Amazon.
The event, free for all Amazon users, not just Prime subscribers, features real-time poll results and political insights delivered by various high-profile contributors.
“Amazon watchers claim this venture proves Prime Video’s ambitions extend beyond just content curation, aiming to redefine viewer expectations regarding live, newsworthy events,” Amazon insider Albert Cheng said, cited by The Hollywood Reporter.
Amazon Prime Video positions this special as a companion to their existing news offerings, which already include varied free streaming ad-supported news channels.
Potentially game-changing, it’s poised to challenge the status quo.
