(DailyEmailNews.com) – Given the amount of questions surrounding the latest attempt on GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump’s life, there is intense speculation among law enforcement officials about the possibility of a broader conspiracy.
Ryan Wesley Routh faces federal gun charges following his arrest near Trump International Golf Course in West Palm Beach, Florida, where he was spotted in a sniper’s nest while Trump was golfing.
Martin County Sheriff William Snyder, whose department handled the arrest, expressed his bafflement.
“It’s very perplexing that Routh knew Trump would be golfing on that Sunday.” He also highlighted the focus on investigating any conspiratorial connections involving Routh.
“They want to know what was going through his head. Did he have help? Is this a conspiracy? Was this a lone wolf? Is he a front man for an organization? They have their hands full. This will not be an easy case to unravel, ” Sheriff Snyder said.
Speculation about how Routh obtained such precise information about Trump’s whereabouts includes a possible inside tip.
Former FBI assistant director Chris Swecker pondered if someone could have leaked the details due to resentment towards Trump.
“If you’re thinking outside the four corners here, there could be somebody at that club — at Mar-a-Lago, or at the golf club — that just doesn’t like him and has different political views. And, you know, they could have fed this information,” Swecker suggested.
Swecker outlined two main theories: “One is this guy had inside information, and having enough time to get to that fifth hole — that location between the fifth and sixth hole — and get himself set up,” he explained.
“The other possibility is that he’s been surveilling the former president, and either watching Mar-a Lago as to when he leaves, or actually physically following him and his vehicle and determining exactly where he went.”
Secret Service agents discovered Routh on the golf course armed with a scoped rifle, positioned about 300 to 500 yards from where Trump was playing.
Routh reportedly had a GoPro camera mounted on a fence and was hiding within the property’s hedges, ready to strike as Trump approached his range.
After the Secret Service fired at him, Routh escaped but was soon arrested on I-95 in Martin County.
