The tragedy shines a light on questions about public safety and the responsibilities of pet owners.
The attack took place on Monday afternoon at 35 Dennison St. Shortly after 5 p.m., the Boston Police Department received a distress call.
Responding officers faced a violent scene where Jeriline McGinnis was fatally attacked by her dog, Newsweek reports.
During the incident, a man believed to be McGinnis’s husband was also bitten while trying to intervene.
As officers arrived, they encountered immediate hostility and caution was necessary for their own safety.
“At that time they immediately rendered first aid to both victims. While rendering aid at that time, two of the responding officers were attacked by the same dog and one of the officers discharged their firearm, striking the dog,” said Boston Police Deputy Superintendent Paul McLaughlin, cited by The Boston Herald.
Deputy Superintendent McLaughlin confirmed the aggressive nature of the dog necessitated its shooting.
The breed of the dog has not been released.
This crucial detail raises concerns about pet ownership responsibility and the potential danger some breeds may pose.
Three additional dogs were taken from the property by city authorities.
Sources suggest Massachusetts law allows for the classification of a dog as “dangerous,” enabling authorities to take drastic actions such as euthanasia when necessary.
“Obviously the dog, given what he did to the two victims, the owners of the dogs, the officers made the decision to discharge and put the dog down,” McLaughlin said.
The case is currently under investigation by homicide detectives and a unit assigned to review police gunshots.
Authorities are actively seeking public input on the incident and any information regarding the relationship between the victims and the dogs.
As this case unfolds, the community is left grappling with the loss and pondering measures to prevent similar tragedies.
