The suspect seemingly harbored deep hatred for the Democratic governor and methodically planned the violent assault with homemade weapons.
38-year-old Cody Balmer faces multiple serious charges, including arson, attempted homicide, and potential terrorism charges after setting fire to Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro’s official residence.
According to authorities, Balmer walked an hour to the governor’s mansion, scaled a fence, and broke windows with a hammer before using Molotov cocktails to spark the blaze.
Security footage captured Balmer surveilling the property before the attack.
A subsequent search of his residence revealed a distinctive Snap-On jacket matching what was seen in the footage and a gasoline container.
During questioning, Balmer admitted to police that he harbored hatred toward Governor Shapiro and intended to cause harm.
The fire occurred following the Shapiro family’s celebration of the first night of Passover.
Governor Shapiro and his family were awakened by authorities banging on their door and were forced to evacuate as flames swallowed portions of the residence.
“Thank God no one was injured and the fire was extinguished,” Shapiro stated.
The attack raises serious concerns about security at the governor’s residence.
Despite being a high-profile political figure who gained national attention as a potential running mate for Kamala Harris last year, Shapiro’s residence was vulnerable.
According to criminal complaints, Balmer admitted to using gasoline from a lawnmower to craft his homemade incendiary devices, fully aware they could cause serious harm.
After setting the fire, he evaded police before eventually being captured. He is currently being held in Dauphin County Prison awaiting arraignment.
The FBI has joined the investigation, working alongside state authorities to determine if additional charges may be warranted.
State officials have described the incident as “a targeted attack” not just on the governor’s family but on the entire Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
The severity of the attack has led investigators to consider potential terrorism charges.
Shapiro has vowed to continue his duties despite the attack, stating he would not allow violence to deter him from serving in office or practicing his faith.
