(DailyEmailNews.com) – The Secret Service announced that the upcoming Congressional session on January 6, 2025, to certify the electoral votes of the 2024 presidential election has been declared a “National Special Security Event.”
This designation has been approved by Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
Specifically, the declaration involves heightened security measures to prevent incidents similar to the Capitol riot of January 6, 2021.
Eric Ranaghan, the special agent in charge of the Secret Service’s Dignitary Protective Division, stated, “National Special Security Events are events of the highest national significance.”
He also highlighted the extensive collaboration among federal, state and local agencies to develop an “integrated security plan to ensure the safety and security of this event and its participants.”
The designation follows a proposal by Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser and includes recommendations from the House Select January 6 Committee and the Government Accountability Office.
Additionally, an Executive Steering Committee, featuring “senior representatives from federal, state and local law enforcement and public safety partners,” will soon meet to detail the security strategies.
The Secret Service will lead the coordination and implementation of the security plan in the role designated by the special event status.
It will be tasked with ensuring extensive federal resources are used effectively alongside state and local efforts.
This proactive approach was similarly applied during the 2021 presidential inauguration and both the Republican and Democrat party conventions earlier in the year.
Said events saw significant law enforcement presence and multiple security layers, successfully preventing any disruptions.
